for the project's implementation phase that
begins in 2015, I have launched today the first
annual World Heroes and Heroines
Competition.

To me a World Hero or Heroine is someone who
develops and implements a breakthrough
practice that will provide enormous benefits for
large numbers of people, but requires little time,
money, and effort compared to the benefits.
Typically, this result will mean combining
several complementary 2,000 percent
solutions (a practice I describe in Adventures
of an Optimist, 2,000 Percent Living and Help
Wanted).

For this contest, there will be first, second, and

Most people have no idea how little of their talent and knowledge they are employing. I see that lack of awareness all the time among my students. I believe that you are underestimating your potential as well.

Here’s an example of what I mean. Dr. Burra Ramulu worked as a shift supervisor at a fertilizer factory in the Middle East for many years. However, his most important responsibility was to train young Arabs to hold the organization’s senior roles. He was effective in such preparation, and all of those with positions above him in the organization were younger men whom he had originally trained.

After deciding to earn a doctorate, Dr. Ramulu became interested in 2,000 percent solutions (ways of accomplishing 20 times the results with the same or less time, money, and effort). His first 2,000 percent solution project was to study how his factory’s profits could be increased by more than 20 times while spending very little money for new investment. He found a way to greatly increase capacity, improve quality, expand productivity, and lower costs that only required an investment equal to about 10 percent of the plant’s existing capital base. As a result, cash flow expanded by more than 20 times.

Realizing that his opportunities to advance his career were constrained in the Middle East, Dr. Ramulu moved back to his native India and took a position with a global producer of basic commodities. As his dissertation subject, Dr. Ramulu investigated how to create a new business model for his employer, the first major business-model improvement for that industry in more than 50 years. As a result, he located a way to lower costs by over 40 percent, to reduce capital needs by even more, and to expand his company’s business volume by several hundred percent. The new business model was approved by his employer and is now being implemented. When in operation, profits for that business in India are expected to expand by much more than 20 times while competitors will be eliminated for many years to come.

Not satisfied with what he had learned and accomplished during the process of attaining his first doctorate, Dr. Ramulu decided to study for a second one. This time his dissertation work was based on an even more fundamental problem: How to lift poor, uneducated people out of despair and to make their lives hopeful and economically successful. Choosing to serve Kasimpet, the village where he grew up, Dr. Ramulu faithfully trekked hundreds of kilometers across India on weekends to teach the people there about 2,000 percent solutions.

Also supported by other volunteers who had once lived in Kasimpet, an initial 50 people soon reformed the bad thinking habits that had held them back, began using better thinking processes, formed a cooperative, and began designing and implementing profitable 2,000 percent solutions. In just a few months, most of those 50 people increased their incomes by more than 20 times, reduced their debts by more than 96 percent, slashed the interest rates they were paying on the remaining debt by 96 percent, and increased their net worths by more 20 times. They also gained new, positive outlooks on life, and sought to cooperate with one another rather than be divided by the accidents of birth from which castes are defined.

As this book was going to press, these 50 people had pledged to teach what they had learned to at least another 20 other people each who will be asked to do the same for 20 more people. Should everyone be faithful, most poverty and despair can be eliminated from that part of India in just a few years.

Naturally, Dr. Ramulu enjoys a wonderful sense of accomplishment from encouraging so many positive improvements. Can you imagine the sense of satisfaction that he enjoys each morning as he thinks about the villagers?

What else might Dr. Ramulu accomplish? It’s up to what God calls him to do. There is no practical limit to his potential to succeed in serving others.

There are millions of people with as much potential as Dr. Ramulu has who could have done what he did to serve others. But few of them choose to serve by learning and teaching breakthrough skills. Dr. Ramulu made that important choice, and that decision liberated him and those he has taught into 2,000 percent solution living.

Since I was young, people have often asked for my advice. I have always been happy to share my ideas, and many people have benefited. I have always been grateful to God for granting me this ability to serve and for providing His guidance for what to say and write.

I was deeply humbled in 1995 when the Holy Spirit directed me to lead an effort to help everyone on the Earth accomplish at least 20 times more. (You can read about the origins, methods, and conclusions of what I call the 400 Year Project, ways to make 400 years worth of normal improvements during the years from 2015 through 2035, in Adventures of an Optimist, BookSurge 2007, and at www.fastforward400.com.) I was so overwhelmed by the magnitude of the task that I had no idea what to do first. Fortunately, He directed my steps and learning so that the necessary solutions have been identified and described in my books about the 400 Year Project.

Despite my willingness to help in every possible way, it recently struck me that I may not have been sharing what I have learned in the right ways: When I asked people who have been reading about my work for years what questions they would like me to answer about accomplishing 20 times more, I found nothing new in what they asked. In fact, I had previously written answers to each of the questions I received.

From those responses I realized that people who want to make breakthroughs in all aspects of their lives need a brief compendium of the most important ways to accomplish 20 times more. This book, 2,000 Percent Solution Living, is intended to facilitate those accomplishments.

After thinking about the possible contents for the book over several weeks, I was surprised to be awakened at 1:30 a.m. on May 19, 2009, by a voice that dictated to me in great detail what should be in this book. This dictation continued for many hours and finally paused for me to begin asking clarifying questions, which were then answered. The instruction lasted over six hours.

From that experience, I concluded that by writing this book I am merely serving as a fleshly vehicle for a message from the Holy Spirit that is intended for all people on Earth. I pray that I have been faithful and accurate in sharing with you what I was directed to write.

Doing these things will help you to hear and understand the Holy Spirit who will guide your steps toward the most productive directions on Earth, will provide you with supernatural support for making performance breakthroughs, and will help you earn eternal rewards to be enjoyed in heaven. As a result, you will have all the wisdom and power you need to do any righteous thing you want. Isn’t that awesome?

Help Reduce Poverty with Your Ideas for a Global Contest

I hope so. I know that I am!

Because of the current global economic issues, I wanted
to do something to help poor people. While recently
reading a book called Crowdsourcing, I was struck by the
opportunity to launch a new kind of contest to create
better solutions for reducing poverty.

Traditionally, online contests have provided a period
of a few months to propose solutions. The best solutions
then gained prizes and recognition . . . and were
publicized for all to use.

The new idea is to start a contest by publishing some
outstanding solutions and inviting people to propose
improvements on those solutions. The list of published
solutions would be continually updated to reflect the
best solutions received to date.

Entrants would have the opportunity to use parts of
already proposed solutions for their entries.

In this way, someone might make a small change that
would provide a large improvement in a fine idea and
turn the result into something much better. And then
the process repeats itself as someone else adds
another valuable small change.

In the contests that were reported, the eventual
winning solutions were approximately 1,000 times
more effective than the first leading solutions that
were received.

I am interested in doing something like this by
beginning with the best solutions for eliminating
poverty that any of my students have generated. I
would publicize these on all of my blogs and put
out a press release about the contest.

Adventures of an Optimist Is Now Available

I thought you might enjoy learning about what I've been slaving over for the last six months to make it easier for you to become a better world hero or heroine.

As you know, I've been working on the 400 Year Project (demonstrating ways to make global improvements at 20 times the usual rate) since 1995. Along the way, I've helped write six books that details progress on the project (The 2,000 Percent Solution, The 2,000 Percent Solution Workbook, The 2,000 Percent Squared Solution, The Portable 2,000 Percent Solution, The Irresistible Growth Enterprise, and The Ultimate Competitive Advantage).

The thinking behind the project has, however, moved much faster than publishing of books has permitted. As a result, I realized early in 2007 that I could see the end of the project.

I decided to share that vision of a world improving on all of its performance areas (big and small, individual and collective). I've put that vision in my new book, Adventures of an Optimist: A Progress Report on the 400 Year Project to Help You Improve 20 Times Faster.

Do You Need a Foreword for a Book That Shows How to Become a World Hero?

Good morning, World Heroes and Heroines!

Are you feeling motivated this morning?

I hope so. I know that I am!

I just finished reading an intriguing book by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin about Mr. Mortenson's work to bring educational opportunity to the rural areas near the mountains in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Here's my review of the book:

Do you like to read heroic tales of overcoming daunting odds to achieve great things? Do you believe that we are past the age of heroes? If you answered yes to either question, you need to read Three Cups of Tea immediately!

Here's the overview of this book. Greg Mortenson was a determined mountain climber on his way back from challenging K2, one of the world's highest and most dangerous peaks in the Himalayas, when he lost his way. He was exhausted from just having helped in the all-but-impossible rescue of one of his fellow climbers. As a result of the second of his mistakes in leaving the so-called trail, Mortenson found himself needing help in a Balti village in Pakistan that he had never heard of, Korphe. The villagers nursed him back to health, and Mortenson began listening to their grievances against the Pakistan government which supported an on-going conflict with India over Kashmir, but did not provide a school for their children. The grateful Mortenson promised to build them a school.

Many people make such promises, but few fulfill them. Mortenson headed back to California and raised the $12,000 he estimated it would take to build the school. With the money in hand, he flew back to Pakistan and started buying supplies. Arriving at the village, his new Balti friends reminded him that there was no bridge to transport the supplies to the village. Mortenson headed back to raise the money for the bridge.

After many more trials, the school was built and a teacher installed. Mortenson had found his life work. He wanted to provide schools for all of the Pakistani children who didn't get an education, especially the girls, who were more likely to stay in their villages and improve living conditions. Everything was difficult. Pakistanis didn't trust him. Muslims thought it was all a plot to convert children to Christianity. Some wanted bribes. People in the United States were generally opposed to helping Muslims unless they had been climbers in that part of the Himalayas. Mortenson got hate mail. But he persevered.

Eventually, his vision expanded to helping with water projects and to providing scholarships for higher education for those who graduated from the schools he built.

Conditions in Afghanistan also called out to him, and he established a similar program there.

But his slim efforts were being overwhelmed by madrassas funded with Saudi money that were often used to recruit and train terrorists. His life changed forever when in the aftermath of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan Parade Magazine wrote an article about his efforts to secure a lasting peace in the region by supporting moderate Muslims with educational aid.

This book is powerfully coauthored by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin. I seldom recall reading such an excellent story about serving humanity in a selfless secular way that isn't tied to a religious vocation.

The book's title refers to a story that Mortenson learned from those who wanted him to slow down and stop acting like an American: The local people wanted to ally with him, and he was trying to run everything. Results improved when he stepped back and became an ally instead of an authoritarian leader.

Here's the basis of the reference: Haji Ali, his first Balti friend, told Mortenson that he had to respect Balti ways. "The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger." "The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest." "The third time you share tea, you are family, and for our family, we are prepared to do anything, even die."

May God bless the authors, their families, and those who work with Mr. Mortenson to expand the light of education to those who wish to see with it.

It occurred to me that this book could easily have been expanded to also include a foreword, afterword, or even a brief chapter that explained how the same principles could be used to benefit 400 times as many people with the same time, effort, and resources.

This made me realize I should extend an invitation to any world heroes who are writing books to help them by writing a foreword or showing them how their approach could be adjusted to help hundreds of others follow an improved path to achieve effective results. Then, such books would succeed both by raising money for the cause . . . and by stimulating a world full of those who are inspired to serve the same cause in the best possible ways.

I certainly hope so. I know that I am!

Who is your most inspiring world hero?

Heroes seem to be a little harder to come by today than they once were. We find out more than perhaps we want to know about high achievers' foibles and weaknesses.

With more and more disclosure, we run the risk of running out of heroes and heroines to emulate.

I have a suggestion: Pick elements from heroes and heroines and assemble them into new combinations of virtues to aspire to.

For example, let's imagine that you want to be a leader in social justice. You might pick the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. for his passion, his courage, his speeches, and his consistent nonviolence. For his ability to withstand setbacks, develop himself under adversity, and heal wounds among his people, you might pick Nelson Mandela. For his willingness to see conflict through to the end, you might pick Abraham Lincoln. For her ability to move people with her portrayals of the evils of injustice, Harriet Beecher Stowe might be added to the list.

Before long, you've assembled a perspective on being a hero or heroine that extends beyond the vision of anyone before. That can liberate you to see new ways to create what you crave to do.

Develop a New Humanitarian Organization to Serve a Billion People Better than a Billionaire!

I am going to lay out this subject in its simplest form. I invite you to add your questions as comments to this post. I will answer each one below so that others can gain from the same information.

Most billionaires don't try to launch their own new billion dollar humanitarian organizations. Rather, they set up a foundation to give out grants to run experiments that they hope some one else will fund. It's like venture capital for humanitarianism. That approach works fine as far as it goes. .

Here's a typical situation:

An organization focuses on a special problem that occurs in many areas such as a lack of clean, potable water. They develop a technology that shows promise for extending these benefits for more people. Fifty sites are used as an experiment.

Five years later, no one is using this equipment. It's sitting broken with parts stripped off for other uses. No one knows how to repair the equipment or how to create funds to maintain the operation.

Having met many successful and unsuccessful humanitarian innovators, I am constantly reminded that many such innovators may have more heart than practical ideas. Most such innovators emphasize one potential advantage in their approach. Their approach falters when the organization cannot deliver that advantage, beneficiaries are unimpressed or there's no ongoing support to maintain the approach.

Here’s a better approach for the 21st century: Create the right three 2,000 percent solutions and you’ll soon have a humanitarian organization serving billions even if you are starting with limited resources.

The three 2,000 percent solutions are:

1. A way to increase the number of people served by 20 times over any existing approach by empowering those who need the help to create and sustain their own benefits;

2. Reduce the organizational and beneficiary costs to create and use the benefits by 95% and invest some of the savings into more benefits not offered by existing organizations for beneficiaries other stakeholders; and

3. Accelerate recruitment of new beneficiaries to develop these benefits to 20 times the best rate of any existing organizations.

On the surface, that sounds like three times the work of creating one 2,000 percent solution. That’s right. But because the benefits multiply against each dimension, the effect is to increase profits by 800,000 percent over a conventional humanitarian organization. That’s worth three times the effort.

To make this process easier, I have decided to create The Humanitarian Master Mind beginning in 2006.

Members will develop new humanitarian models that combine the three essential 2,000 percent solutions into their humanitarian solutions. In doing this, they will be supported by their fellow humanitarians in the Master Mind and by me.

Each member will receive these benefits:

1. Detailed directions, examples and coaching for how to create these three 2,000 percent solutions.

2. Weekly tele-seminars exploring the creation of superior humanitarian approaches built from these three 2,000 percent solutions and how to implement them.

3. Introductions to fellow master mind members with complementary interests and talents to pursue joint ventures and other collaborations.

4. Publicity about their ventures and introductions to donors when these those benefits are desired and appropriate.

5. Twice a year evaluations of humanitarian models and plans.

6. The option to exclude potential competitors from the master mind while in the group.

The charge for these services will be one annual fee that covers membership for up to 12 months.

Become a World Hero by Using a Billionaire Mind Set

Good morning, Future World Heroes and Heroines!

Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so. I know that I am!

One of the most empowering thought exercises my students ever do is to imagine that they have unlimited financial resources to solve a problem. No matter what the problem is, they quickly come up with powerful answers. You can see them sitting a little taller, smiling a little broader and being more friendly as they do. Next, I encourage them to describe their solution in more detail. They happily agree. I feel like I've turned them into queens and kings for a day. I feel their joy.

When they begin to run out of steam . . . but are still feeling really happy, I change the exercise.

Next, I ask them to take their solution and find a way to implement it with no financial resources. Their eyes get a little wider, the smiles turn a little more rueful and the heads twist a little. Then, they shake their heads "yes" and start thinking.

Sometimes they need an idea starter or two to get them off ground zero. Here are a couple of my favorites:

1. Who will benefit so much from your solution that they will be willing to fund some or all of what needs to be done?

2. Who can implement your solution at very little cost?

At that point, bodies begin to lean forward as though preparing for a race. Excitement begins to build as twinkles into their eyes.

They now see that there are no limits . . . except the ones that place on themselves.

Remember that lesson.

Could a billionaire do better? I doubt it.

Because a billionaire has lots of money, billionaires typically skip the powerful part of the exercise where you find a way to do the same task without any financial resources. That's too bad because with a billionaire's greater experience in thinking about large-scale projects, billionaires could get to be very good at this.

Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so. I know that I am!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Imagine a billionaire is trying to select a high school for her or his youngster. By donating a building or two, admission should be no problem. But what can the billionaire expect the youngster will gain from the experience?

The billionaire isn't worried about the youngster getting into college. Another building or two can take care of that issue.

Chances are the billionaire is hoping for some reading, writing and math improvements . . . and a protected environment from the publicity that often surrounds the families of the rich and famous.

Now, imagine that you are a ghetto family that's just hanging on. You also want those same improvements for your youngster, the chance for a better life following the education and freedom from gangs.

You normally wouldn't think that a billionaire and such a ghetto family could team up . . . but that's just what's happening now across America on this Thanksgiving day. For this, I am very grateful.

I began to learn about this unique partnership when I attended a summit meeting on innovation last month in Providence, Rhode Island. During the summit, I heard from and spoke with Dennis 'Doc' Littky who is the director of The Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center in south Providence (The Met). He brought along more than 30 of his high school students, and I was wowed by them! While still in high school, these energetic talented youngsters are focused on internships that help them determine and develop their career interests while building their skills within the context of those internships. One student is studying to be a homicide detective so she can help stop crime in her neighborhood. Another wants to establish a national chain of beauty salons. I think of this process as moving the student ahead into the adult world with an incentive to pursue their dreams. I wanted to become a high school student again!

Dennis invited a few of us to join him for half a day last week at the school. I was even more impressed. A hundred youngsters in grades 9-12 are in each school, and there are four on the campus and two other schools located elsewhere in Providence. Students spend two days a week off campus working on their projects and three days back on campus preparing to go back to work. They have advisors, great facilities and wonderful resources. The school's support structure and facilities are superior to what my younger daughter enjoyed at our state's most elite public high school and my younger son enjoyed at our state's most elite private high school. They would have learned more at The Met!

Where do these students come from? They are randomly selected by a drawing from among those who would like to attend. Most are poor and live in Providence. More than 80 percent qualify for Federal meal funds.

How do they do? In 2004, 94 percent graduated from high school compared to an average of 57 percent for all Providence public schools. Most impressively, every graduate was accepted into college. Think of that!

Educators from all around the world come to visit The Met. It's sparking a revolution in teaching and learning. You can read more about the organization at www.metcenter.org/.

Having heard about The Met's innovative and successful approach, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provided $5 million in seed money to establish 35 pilot high schools like these in the most depressed urban environments around the U.S. Most of those schools are now open and the rest will be soon. That's a remarkable accomplishment because the funding was a lot less than what was actually needed. Dennis and his team made it work anyway. Kudos to the Gates and to The Met!

Now, if that isn't something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving, I don't know what is.

I wanted to share this story with you because it exemplifies my philosophy that it doesn't take money to live better than a billionaire and to be a world hero or heroine. . . it just takes good thinking and commitment. Hail to Dennis Littky and his co-founder Elliot Washor for thier fine work!

How could a billionaire do better?

I see one opportunity. A billionaire could encourage parallel innovations. For instance, grants could be offered to create the pre-school, elementary and middle school versions of The Met. In addition, a college version could be established.

Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly hope so! I know that I certainly am.

Long before I conceived of the subject of this blog and began developing the book upon which it is based, I worked in the area of helping people find their own ways of becoming more productive. One of the first public fruits of that work was a book called The 2,000 Percent Solution which was published by the American Management Association in 1999. My co-authors were Carol Coles and Robert Metz.

Since then, I've given more talks than I can count to CEO and senior management groups in companies of all sizes and conducted classes and workshops all around the world to help people apply the lessons of that book.

What's the premise? You can accomplish 20 times as much with the same time and effort and resources in virtually everything you do.

Why is that the case? First, because experience has shown that such improvements routinely available. Second, because there's a simple process you can learn to follow that will get you there. Third, because we operate so far below the potential of what we do because of bad habits we've fallen into (something my co-authors and I call "stalls").

Since 2003, I've been teaching on-line students ways to revolutionize their lives for the better. One of the fruits of that work has been to create a workbook with my esteemed colleague, Carol Coles, based on The 2,000 Percent Solution to make it easier to make such wonderful improvements.

The workbook will be published in December, and I know that you will want to buy a copy. As soon as the book is available for purchase on-line, I'll let you know.

More Beautiful Thoughts with Dr. Masaru Emoto

Good morning, Future World Heroes and Heroines!

Do you want to live a life filled with beauty?

Do you enjoy making everyone happy around you?

Does good music transport you into heavenly delight?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you've come to the right blog post.

Today, we'll look at how thoughts create changes in the physical world . . . and what the implications are for your life.

When I attended Jack Canfield's Breakthrough to Success seminar in Lake Las Vegas in August, one of the most intriguing sessions came when he shared photographs of frozen water crystals that had been exposed to different thoughts, words and music. This pioneering work was begun in the 1990s in Japan by Dr. Masaru Emoto and published in his best-selling books, Messages from Water, The Hidden Messages in Water and The True Power of Water.

Many people at the seminar had learned about Dr. Emoto's work by watching a documentary called, "What the Bleep Do We Know?" You can see a trailer from this film at http://www.hado.net/news.html/.

While walking down the street in Manhattan a few weeks later, I noted that Dr. Emoto would be offering a course with The Learning Annex. When I saw that the course was being run while I had to be in New York, I decided to sign up. That was one of the best decisions that I made this year.

Dr. Emoto combined science and spirituality to argue for a new approach to good living. I think you'll find it fascinating.

Let me briefly summarize some of his most profound thoughts for you:

1. We are water.

When we are an egg, we are 98% water. As a baby, we are 80% water. An adult is 70% water. People over 65 are 60% water. When we are less than 50% water, we die.

2. Water came to Earth after this world was formed.

In 1997, NASA reported that studies of ice ball comets showed that at the rate they are currently striking the Earth such comets account for all of the water on the Earth. Only 10 of the 500 plus attendees at the seminar had read that study. So water is literally a gift from the Heavens.

3. We are on Earth to learn to live and work together in harmony.

Dr. Emoto pointed out that what we understand about physics tells us that everything God created is comprised of vibrations that create objects and energy. Since human beings are the only beings on Earth that can vibrate in harmony with everything else on the planet, it must be our unique role to create those sympathetic harmonies. He demonstrated this by showing how hitting the right note will cause a tuning fork to resonate in harmony and re-create the note.

4. Water crystals show the potential for harmony coming from humans.

Dr. Emoto shared many of his photographs. They were remarkable.

When water is exposed to different thoughts, words, images and music, the crystalline structure of the water when frozen differs markedly.

Interestingly, the most beautiful crystal he has found from these experiments is created by thinking or writing down "Love and Thanks".

One fascinating contrast was between the ugly, misshapen crystal that forms in response to the command "Do it" and the beautiful crystal that formed in reaction to the offer "Let's do it together". Dr. Emoto wryly noted that he wished he had known of that difference before becoming a father.

Each of the world's leading religions when spoken or thought creates a beautiful crystal. Combine their names and you get an even more beautiful crystal with what appears to be a face of a person at the top.

Dr. Emoto shared gorgeous images of crystals formed after being exposed to music like Beethoven's Ninth, Mozart's Eine Kleine Nacht Musick, Amazing Grace and John Lennon's Imagine. We sang Imagine together, and you could feel the resonance in the room grow.

5. Prayer can create crystals where none were possible before.

Dr. Emoto had found it impossible to create crystals by using Tokyo tap water. Then he arranged for children to pray for tap water in the following ways:

"Thank you, water." "We love you, water." "We'll take care of you, water."

As a result, beautifully balanced crystals formed in the tap water.

He pointed out that there's a Japanese saying, "Water is a reflection of your soul." That may be literally true.

6. Dr. Emoto has created the Emoto project to inform the world's youth about this potential.

He plans to raise the money to provide 650 million copies of his books to youngsters of ages 3-12 over the next ten years so they can understand the importance of creating positive resonance for the world from the thoughts, prayers, images and actions of human beings. There is a course being started in Los Angeles in early November for those who want to assist in spreading this knowledge.

7. Dr. Emoto is clear that his work is creating new questions for which no one has any answers.

His work has a profound meaning for us all that we understand at a spiritual level. If you see and hear him talk, I think you'll agree that you will have a deep understanding of his message beyond what you can articulate.

I think that Dr. Emoto should be considered one of our World Heroes. Do you agree?

A World Hero in the Making

Good morning, Future World Heroes and Heroines!

Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly know that I am as I write about this exciting topic.

It's often surprising how little it takes to become a world hero or heroine.

Here's an example.

One of my Rushmore University students is a Christian missionary pilot in Africa. In that role, he helps with a variety of tasks including taking needed food and medicine into deprived areas, transporting out people who are injured or ill so they can receive needed medical are, and bringing traveling missionairies to provide training and support for missionaries operating in fixed locations in the interior.

He kept commenting to me that he wanted to take a course on better scheduling his flights. He may not fly for two weeks and then will fly every day for a week. I thought that was his point.

As the course began, I pressed him to come up with a more powerful focus for creating a 2,000 percent solution (a way to accomplish 20 times as much with the same time and effort -- think of this as being like cloning yourself 20 times but with no additional cost or effort).

The pilot mentioned that it made no sense to him that some Protestant missionary locations might receive three educational missions in a week while other locations hadn't seen an educational mission in years. From talking with Catholic missionary pilots, he knew that such visits were more evenly spread among the Catholic missions.

I suggested that he ask the traveling Protestant missionaries why this occurs. It turns out that they had no idea whether a given location had received other traveling missionaries or not. They were responding to requests for aid. Those missions that asked the most missionaires for aid simply got the most aid. Those who didn't ask, got very little aid.

The pilot got in touch with various councils that help coordinate the various Protestant churches and interested them in the idea of putting up a Web site that will describe all of the Protestant missions in the world, which sorts of aid each has received and when, and what their on-going needs are.

Such a site is now planned to be up and running in 2006. While it's too early to know what the effect will be, it's possible that millions will receive God's Word sooner than would otherwise occur.

Should that happen, it seems to me that the pilot will have become a World Hero. Yet I doubt if he will see himself that way. This humble man was simply curious about why his flight plans made no sense.

In many cases, that's all it takes: Standing up and taking the time to do something about a situation that needs fixing.

Here are some ideas where your assistance could make a difference in the near-term:

1. Establish a non-profit foundation that can focus attention on creating more world heroes and heroines along the lines of the examples I described among my students...

2. Find people who would like to learn how to become world heroes.

3. Raise funds to pay for poor people who would like to become world heroes but need some funding to do so.

Good morning, Future World Heroes and Heroines!

Are you feeling motivated this morning? I certainly know that I am as I write about this exciting topic.

Who were your favorite heroes and heroines at age 2? At age 5? At age 10? At age 15? At age 20? And now?

If you are like most people, you find it harder and harder to find heroes and heroines.

In a sense, heroism is out of style. People opt for money, fame and power instead. When was the last time you read about a heroic action by a billionaire? I am at a loss to think of one.

That's a shame because the world needs heroes and heroines now more than ever.

My wife and I visited Ambassador Stu Beck, permanent representative to the United Nations from Palau last week. I had been sharing with him some of the many examples of ways that my students from Rushmore University were making a tremendous difference in the world. Let me describe a few examples for you:

In Africa, Dr. Elijah Chingosho has outlined a vision of how to develop safe, low-cost air travel that will spur economic, social and political development among the poorest African nations. His book on the subject has become a template for government and business leaders across the continent. You can read about his book on this subject at http://www.afraa.org/ebooksalespage.htm/.

In a poor African nation, another student (who chooses to remain anonymous) has developed a plan to provide vocational education to millions of unemployed African young people that requires no additional government resources. The plan is already creating large enrollment increases in his nation.

In Asia, the head of pediatrics at a leading hospital has devised a way to vastly increase the number of poor patients her hospital can serve at no additional cost.

In Thailand, a Japanese executive has developed a new approach to environmental best practices that involves operating a business so that it actually improves the environment . . . rather than just trying not to harm the environment too much.

In England, an IT staffer has developed several ingenious ways to reduce millions of hospital errors and the spreading of infections from one patient to another through automatically sterilizing computer keyboards.

In Africa, a dentist took on the challenge of improving entrepreneurial education and has launched a new educational program to build the economy and create thousands of jobs.

Each of these students is a hero or a heroine to me.

Let me explain.

The efforts that they have already made will inevitably lead to improving the lives of millions of people across vast parts of the world. Lives will be saved, illnesses will be avoided, families will prosper that would not otherwise have done, valuable products will be invented that would not otherwise have come to market, the world will be a cleaner and nicer place, and peoples' minds will be filled with constructive, valuable thoughts and knowledge.

Although it will take many people to create those improvements, the ideas that will lead to the improvements started with the thoughts of a single person.

Paradoxically, each of these heroes and heroines will tell you that what they did could and should have been done decades earlier. That, to me, is evidence that we need more people who want to use their minds to make a difference in creating a better world for us all.

Let me return to Ambassador Beck. He proposed that I start working to recognize these heroes and heroines who are making the difference in the lives of millions. He proposed that as a long-term goal, I seek funding to provide substantial prizes for those with the best accomplishments in this arena and to publicize the best ideas . . . so they would have wider application.

Ambassador Beck kindly volunteered to serve on the panel that would award the prizes.

I don't know how to do all that Ambassador Beck suggested yet, but I think he has correctly identified what needs to be done. This blog will be the beginnings of that effort.

I welcome your suggestions, your examples and your help in any other form.
